Kick-off Meeting

The kick-off meeting took place on May 28th-29th, 2010, in Limassol, Cyprus. During this first meeting major decisions were taken, regarding the research and the managerial aspects of the project. The guidelines for the work in each one of the four Work Packages (WPs) were identified and the topics for the Multi-Disciplinary Projects (MDPs) were further formulated. Further, decisions on the ESRs recruitment selection and the effective communication between partners were decided.

IABMAS 2010 International Conference - SmartEN Mini Symposium

A successful SmartEN Mini Symposium “SmartEN Marie Curie ITN - Smart Management for Sustainable Human Environment” was organized by Prof. Onoufriou and Mrs. Helmerich during the 5th International Conference on Bridge Maintenance, Safety and Management (IABMAS 2010), in July 2010, in Philadelphia, USA. The SmartEN Mini Symposium hosted 12 papers by SmartEN Marie Curie ITN partners.

1st Network Multidisciplinary Workshop

The first Multi-Disciplinary Workshop was organized by the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT), in Limassol, Cyprus on March 29th-31st, 2011. There were 39 participants from Europe (UK, France, Denmark, Serbia, Italy, Greece, Switzerland, Spain, Cyprus, Poland), from Africa (Tunisia), and from Asia (India, Indonesia, China, Bangladesh, Mongolia). During this workshop, the ESRs had the opportunity to present their research focus and expected contributions to the multi-disciplinary research programmes. The research team had the opportunity to declare areas they expect to contribute in terms of the generic key issues in each WP and MDP. Various contributions were mapped to be able to have a good overall picture of the distribution of the research efforts and how they could be combined to achieve the overall objectives for SmartEN. The workshop increased communication with and between the different research teams and it was an important milestone for this important coordinated collaborative multi-disciplinary European effort for a Smart Management for Sustainable Human Environment.

2nd Network Multidisciplinary Workshop

The second Multi-Disciplinary Workshop was organized in Athens, Greece on July 7th, 2011 at the premises of Athens Information Technology (AIT), in conjunction with the SmartEN Summer School. The workshop aimed to train ESRs in multidisciplinary areas related to the context of the SmartEN research. During this workshop the ESRs had the opportunity to present their work and to hear from their fellow ESRs, as well as from Senior Scientists in SmartEN. This had given them the opportunity to develop further their presentation and communication skills since they had to present and discuss their research and progress to the consortium.

Summer School

The Summer School was organized by Athens Information Technology (AIT), in Athens, Greece from July 4th, 2011 to July 16th, 2011. The Summer School program was led by preeminent academics coming both from the network and from renowned international Universities. It was designed with the aim to train ESRs on technical issues related to the SmartEN project, covering both the civil and electrical engineering aspects of the project. The technical training was complemented with a number of general topics that aimed at broadening the perspective of ESRs through seminars in philosophy of science, ethics, history, and business and communication skills. In summary, summer school topics featured:

  • Non-destructive testing and evaluation
  • Smart proactive management
  • Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
  • Simulation modeling language laboratory
  • Philosophy, Ethics and History of engineering
  • Business and Innovation Management
  • Communication Skills

The first week of the training activities was held at the premises of AIT in Athens, and the second week in Ancient Olympia, next to the archeological site. The workshop was complemented with extra-curriculum activities, including visits to museums, traditional villages and beaches.
