The main concept of the SmartEN proposal is to create a transnational training network aimed at improving the career perspectives of ESRs in both public and private sectors. The network will implement a joint multidisciplinary research training programme which will be focused on the growth of scientific, technological knowledge and professional skills through research on individual, personalised projects in the field of smart management for sustainable human environment. The network aims to achieve the following objectives:

  • To conduct top level research and training and devise innovative solutions for specific EU needs in the areas of monitoring and smart proactive management of Structural Systems, Heritage and Infrastructure, Transportation Infrastructure Systems and Urban Microclimate.
  • To educate the next generation of intersectional and transnational researchers inside a wide European research training network which includes universities, research centres and the industry, by strengthening the human resources and skills infrastructure in the area of smart management of the sustainable environment.
  • To take forward the state-of-the-art in wireless sensor communications, digital signal processing and non destructive evaluation for the successful application of wireless sensors in the smart proactive management of the built and natural environment.
  • To promote research activities in the specific scientific areas by disseminating the SmartEN results in scientific journals and international conferences, and by securing the intellectual property rights through patents and trademarks.
  • To create an integrated long-standing research base in EU, by bringing together universities, research institutes and industrial players active in different research disciplines, related to smart infrastructure management.
  • To organise training events which will give ESRs the opportunity to gain high quality training in multidisciplinary related topics, work in a multicultural environments, and visit different countries and learn their history, language and culture. To give ESRs the necessary additional skills so as to widen their career perspective with courses such as writing and presentation skills, language courses, project management, teamwork, leadership, entrepreneurship, and IPR.
